Sibling Organizes Charity Event for “Courageous” Brother

Louisville — When big brother Torin Hofmann and his family learned that his youngest brother, Griffin, had been diagnosed with a severely debilitating disease (Tethered Spinal Cord Syndrome), instead of wallowing in sorrow, they decided to take matters into their own hands.

On August 7, 2010, Hofmann — along with, Den of Sin Productions, LLC — will host Pillows for a Cure, a charity event to raise money for  The Center of Courageous Kids, a non-profit organization that uplifts children who have life-threatening illnesses by creating experiences year-round that are memorable, exciting, fun, build self-esteem, are physically safe, and medically sound, in Griffin’s name.

Executive producer of the Den of Sin Internet Radio Show and mother of the two boys, Dusty June, said that her son — who is affectionately called “Griffy” by friends and family — is happy nine-year-old boy who has never met a stranger. Although Tethered Spinal Cord Syndrome is a disabling and painful disorder according to Dusty June, she said her family didn’t want to “sit around feeling sorry for themselves” or for Griffin. They wanted to take action.

Through the thoughtful actions of a loving older brother, the charity event began to take shape. Hoffman began diligently working a plan to host a “pillow fight” to raise funds in support of the Kentucky non-profit organization, The Center for Courageous Kids. Dusty June says the event will provide critically needed funding to the organization through a variety of events, to include musical acts and the main event: a pillow fight.

"Come out, fight with some pillows, enjoy live music and entertainment, meet some local celebrities, and help us fund this amazing organization," Dusty June said. "Sound like a plan? It does to us!”

Dusty June also said if anyone would like to make it to the event, but can’t, they are more than welcome to host a pillow fight of their own in conjunction with the event as long as funds are earmarked for The Center for Courageous Kids. Hofmann and Dusty June have been working around the clock to secure the line-up for the event.

"We will be constantly updating the event listing as the weeks go by, and will be adding sponsors, bands, musicians, and other attractions and activities," she said. "There will be fun things for the kids to do, great entertainment for the adults, and rampant feathers flying everywhere in the ring of fluffy destruction!"

The event is free to attend, however, if guests want to pillow fight, they are asked to purchase a special pillow for $5. Donations will be accepted throughout the event.

"We will be posting information on how to donate to this amazing cause even if you cannot be there, and adding more entertainment weekly," Dusty June said. "So keep informed and look for more information as the event nears."

The Center for Courageous Kids will receive 100 percent of the profits from the event.

Pillows for a Cure — which has an event listing on Facebook that will be updated weekly — will be held on August 7 at the Paintball Asylum at 3101 Pond Station Road in Louisville from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.  The family friendly event consists of live music including headliners Boozer and Jaida Blue, local celebrities, vendors and entertainment. A raffle will be held for prizes donated by the local community for $1 throughout the event.
